Concert on Saturday 20 May 2017 7.30 pm Brentwood Ursuline Convent High School, Queens' Road, Brentwood, Essex CM14 4EX From Impressionism to Mysticism. We welcome back David Todd to conduct an exciting programme of impressionist and mystical masterpieces from the late 19th and early 20th century. Starting with Debussy's impressionist Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, with its flute solos symbolising the awakening of the faun's sensuality (written for the great dancer Nijinsky), we move to Hungary in 1907 for Bartók's Portrait No 1 for violin and orchestra. Subtitled "Perfection", it was an early work, written when he was influenced by Debussy, and dedicated to a young violinist with whom Bartók was desperately in love. English Impressionism from the same year follows with Delius's atmospheric Brigg Fair before we move on a decade to Gustav Holst and his interest in astrology and mysticism and his much-loved suite The Planets. Debussy Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune Bartók Portrait No 1 "Perfection" Delius Brigg Fair Holst The Planets Conductor David Todd Leader Charles Clark Tickets are £12 on the night (£6 for those aged 18 and under) or £10 (and £6 for those aged 18 or under) if bought in advance (booking fee payable).
